I work as a researcher at CNR-ITB in the fields of structural bioinformatics and drug discovery. I conduct research related to human health through structural biology analyses for drug discovery purposes using computational approaches, while also considering methodological aspects, with particular interest in computationally manageable methods that are formally correct and/or have low error rates. I have conducted research on Cystic Fibrosis, therapies for certain types of carcinomas, SARS-CoV-2, protein C, mutation analysis, and drug repurposing and drug discovery for competitive as well as allosteric inhibitors. I am also interested in infrequently investigated aspects such as binding selectivity as part of optimization for computational drug discovery. Previously, I conducted research on Grid Computing and management of related resources for bioinformatics purposes.
I graduated with honors in Computer Engineering from the University of Bologna, from which I also obtained my Ph.D. The degree was obtained including a period abroad as a Research Assistant at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA. Previously, I obtained my scientific high school diploma, also with top marks.
Research Activities
The use of molecular modeling for detailed studies of the recognition and binding processes of macromolecules of biological and pharmacological interest.
Investigation, High Throughput Virtual Screening (HTVS), rational and de novo design, drug repurposing, and iterative optimization of pharmacologically active molecules and other therapeutic entities (like small molecules and RNAs) aimed at treating or preventing pathological conditions in living organisms.
